Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Transport hub in Montérégie, Quebec

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu sits on both banks of the Richelieu River in the eastern Montérégie region and serves as a major junction between Montreal and the southern areas. The Chambly Canal links the river to the St. Lawrence system and carries recreational and freight boats.

Fort Saint-Jean was built by French forces in 1667 and became a critical control point on this strategic river route during early colonial conflicts. The fort shaped how this region developed for centuries afterward.

The International Balloon Festival takes place each August and draws visitors to watch hundreds of hot air balloons rise into the sky. This event has become woven into how the community celebrates together.

Walking paths run along the Chambly Canal offering places to stroll and watch birds, especially in warmer months. The riverfront is easy to reach from several points throughout the city.

This city launched the first railway line in British North America in 1836, creating an early connection to La Prairie. This pioneering achievement in transportation became a turning point in North American rail history.
