Thetford Mines

Thetford Mines is a city in the Appalachian region of Quebec that developed around mining operations. The settlement spreads across a substantial area and sits at a moderate elevation where the terrain reflects its industrial past.

The town began in 1876 after asbestos deposits were found in the area. It later took on a new name as it grew into an important mining hub for the region.

The Mineralogy and Mining Museum displays machinery, minerals, and documents from former mining operations that once defined the region. Walking through it gives a sense of how extraction shaped daily life and transformed the landscape.

The city connects to nearby areas through regional roads and has a local airport available. Both options give visitors flexibility in choosing how to arrive depending on where they are coming from.

In the 1970s, the course of the Bécancour River was altered to make room for mining operations. This large-scale change permanently reshaped the geography and layout of the entire community.
