Prescott, Historic town in southeastern Ontario, Canada
Prescott sits along the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River in southeastern Ontario, forming a connected border area with Ogdensburg across the water in the United States. The town is linked to the American side through an international bridge that shapes the character of this river region.
Edward Jessup, a Loyalist soldier from the American Revolution, founded Prescott in 1787 and named it after Governor-in-Chief Robert Prescott. The location then grew as a British settlement in this border region.
The St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival presents professional theater productions during the summer months in outdoor settings along the waterfront.
The town sits directly on the river and makes it easy for visitors to reach the water and view the border with the United States. Local services and visitor information are available through the municipal office, which can direct you to area attractions and resources.
The Kinsmen Amphitheatre hosts events year-round and serves as a rare permanent outdoor stage in this border region. This venue shapes the cultural identity of the place more than many visitors expect.
