Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, Steel truss arch bridge at Canada-United States border, Michigan and Ontario.
The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is a steel arch crossing over the St. Marys River between Michigan and Ontario. The roadway carries traffic in both directions across multiple spans supported by tall arch trusses that rise above the water.
This crossing was built in the early 1960s to allow road traffic between the twin cities. It replaced earlier ferry services across the river.
The International Bridge Walk, established in 1987, brings together communities from Michigan and Ontario for a cross-border pedestrian crossing event.
Travelers need valid identification for the border crossing and can pay toll fees in either currency. The crossing usually takes just a few minutes but may be longer during peak hours.
The bridge architecture differs on each side of the border, with distinct arch configurations on American and Canadian territory. This asymmetry makes the structure recognizable both from above and from the shore.
