Sault Locks Park, Protected area and historic park in Chippewa County, US

Sault Locks Park is a protected area and park on the shore of the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan. It sits directly alongside the Soo Locks, the lock system that allows ships to travel between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

The Soo Locks first opened in 1855, after Congress granted land to Michigan in 1852 to fund their construction. The federal government later took over the site and added more locks over the decades, including the Poe Lock in 1896.

A Japanese-style archway and a lit fountain near the riverbank give the park a distinctive look that contrasts with the heavy machinery of the locks nearby. In summer, local musicians perform weekly evening concerts in the park, drawing both residents and visitors to the waterfront.

The park sits along the riverfront and is easy to reach on foot, with parking available nearby. An observation platform offers a close view of ships passing through the locks, and a visitor center next to the park explains how the system works.

The locks work entirely by gravity, with no pumps involved: water flows in or out of the chambers through gates to raise or lower each ship. A building from 1899 that once housed the US Weather Bureau still stands on the site and now serves as a museum.
