Chisasibi, Cree village in Eeyou Istchee, Canada

Chisasibi is a Cree community located on the eastern shore of James Bay, occupying a large territory with access to the La Grande River system. The settlement includes schools, shops, and residential areas organized to serve the local population.

A trading post was established here in 1803, attracting nomadic Cree groups to settle near the location. This early contact point became the foundation for the community that exists today.

Cree language fills daily conversations and community spaces here, forming the backbone of how people interact with each other. You hear it spoken naturally in homes, shops, and gatherings, reflecting deep roots in local identity.

The community has schools and basic services with an organized center for residents and visitors. Keep in mind that seasons heavily influence life here, and proper preparation for the climate is important.

The entire settlement was relocated in the 1970s due to water flow changes from a major hydroelectric project. This move was one of the largest relocation efforts for an indigenous community in Canada.
