Cité de l'Or

The Cité de l'Or occupies the grounds of the former Lamaque Mine with underground galleries extending about 300 feet deep. The museum displays historical equipment, vehicles, and tools used throughout mining operations.

A major gold discovery in 1923 sparked mining operations in the region and transformed it significantly. The Lamaque Mine ran from 1935 to 1985, becoming central to northwestern Quebec's mining development.

The exhibits show how miners lived and worked each day. The nearby Bourlamaque Mining Village offers a window into the homes and community life of that era.

Visitors should wear closed-toe shoes and bring warm clothing for underground tours. Access is limited to those roughly 3 feet 7 inches (1.1 meters) tall and at least 6 years old.

The site has served as a training center for new miners since 2007. This dual purpose merges hands-on instruction with preservation of historical mining methods for future professionals.
