Mont Orford, Mountain peak in Estrie, Canada
Mont Orford is a mountain in the Estrie region of Quebec, Canada, reaching 853 meters (2,799 ft) and forming the core of Parc national du Mont-Orford. Its slopes are covered in mixed forest and crossed by a network of trails used for skiing in winter and hiking or cycling in summer.
The mountain was used for recreation long before any formal protection, and a first provincial park was created in the area in 1938. It became Parc national du Mont-Orford in 1977, which brought stronger rules for managing the land and its visitors.
Mont Orford sits at the heart of the Eastern Townships, a region shaped by both French and British settlement, and outdoor life here is deeply rooted in local identity. Every season brings a different crowd: skiers in winter, hikers and cyclists in summer, all sharing the same trails.
The mountain is about a 2-hour drive from Montreal and can be reached by car on well-maintained roads. Weather can change quickly depending on the season, so bringing layers and checking conditions before heading out is a good idea.
Mont Orford is home to Orford Musique, a classical music academy and summer festival that has taken place on the mountain's grounds since the 1950s. It is one of the few places in the world where you can hike in the morning and attend a professional concert outdoors in the evening.
