Mile End

Mile End is a residential neighborhood in Le Plateau-Mont-Royal characterized by apartment buildings with external spiral staircases, colorful facades, and tree-lined streets running between Saint Denis and Hutchison Streets. The area stretches from Mount Royal Avenue to Van Horne Avenue and contains numerous cafes, vintage shops, and restaurants concentrated along Saint Viateur Street.

The neighborhood began as a crossroads in the early 1800s and became a railway hub after 1876. Montreal annexed the area in 1909, which marked the start of its transformation from a rural junction into an urban district.

Independent bookstores and art galleries define the neighborhood's character, while traditional bagel bakeries continue making fresh pastries using recipes passed down through generations. These shops reflect how the community values craftsmanship and creative expression in everyday life.

The neighborhood is easy to navigate on foot, with wide sidewalks and clear street markers throughout. It is best explored during daytime when shops and cafes are open and the streets feel active.

Former textile factories now house technology companies, including Ubisoft's Montreal headquarters located in repurposed industrial spaces. This conversion shows how the area has adapted to modern needs while keeping its industrial heritage visible.
