Portland, Police village in Rideau Lakes, Canada
Portland is a police village situated on the southeast shore of Big Rideau Lake, located about 60 kilometers northeast of Kingston. The settlement lies along Ontario Highway 15 at an elevation of 130 meters.
The settlement began in the early 1800s as 'The Landing,' functioning as a transfer point for passengers traveling between Brockville and Perth. Water transportation was the primary means of moving people through the region at that time.
The village took its name in 1843 from William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, a choice that reflected the era's transatlantic connections. The name stuck and became central to how residents identify their community.
The area operates under the Eastern Time Zone with telephone area codes 613 and 343 for local communications. The postal code K0G 1V0 applies to the community for mail and delivery services.
Each winter, Portland Outdoors organizes an international speed skating competition called Skate the Lake on the frozen surface of Big Rideau Lake. This event draws athletes and spectators from multiple countries to participate.
