Lemieux Island

Lemieux Island is a river island in the Ottawa River between Ontario and Quebec that divides the waterway into separate channels. The island contains a water treatment facility and includes a public dog park area for visitors to use.

The island became important in the mid-20th century when a water treatment plant was built there to serve the region. A significant fire in 1984 marked a turning point in the facility's history and affected local infrastructure operations.

The island serves as a neighborhood gathering spot where residents bring their dogs to the dedicated park and watch the river flowing past. People use this space to spend time outdoors while enjoying the water views around them.

The island can be reached through the Chief William Commanda Bridge, which connects different parts of the National Capital Region and is open to pedestrians. The visit works best in dry weather, and there is plenty of space to explore the public areas on foot.

The water treatment facility serves a large portion of the metropolitan area and operates with modern safety systems installed after the 1984 fire. Most visitors do not realize that this critical infrastructure sits right next to the popular dog park area.
