Minister's Island
Minister's Island, Tidal island estate in Chamcook, Canada.
Minister's Island is a grand estate on a tidal island near Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, featuring a mansion with more than 50 rooms and sandstone construction. The property spans 500 acres and includes numerous outbuildings, among them a circular bathhouse that functioned as a studio space.
A prominent railway businessman acquired the island in 1890 and developed it as his summer retreat, creating a sophisticated residence with numerous bedrooms and fine furnishings. The site later became recognized as an important national heritage location.
The owner was a passionate painter who created original artworks during his stays here, with many pieces now displayed in major Canadian collections. Visitors can see how art was integrated into the daily life of this prosperous household.
The island is accessible by driving across the ocean floor during low tide, so checking the tide schedule before your visit is crucial. Plan your trip around the tidal cycle to ensure safe access to the property.
The circular bathhouse on the grounds was repurposed by the owner as a private art studio where he regularly painted and sketched during summer months. This unconventional outbuilding demonstrates how leisure and artistic pursuits were intertwined for wealthy individuals of that era.
