Walpole Island First Nation, First Nation territory at St. Clair River, Ontario, Canada.

Walpole Island First Nation comprises six connected islands with extensive wetlands near the border between Ontario and Michigan. The territory spans approximately 6,900 hectares of water and marsh landscape that forms a rich natural system.

The islands have been inhabited by Anishinaabe peoples for centuries, with documented pressure from colonial expansion in the 1800s. Outside influences and missions marked a turning point in the territory's development.

The territory is home to the Ojibwa, Potawatomi, and Ottawa nations, who share governance and maintain their traditions here. Visitors can see how these communities continue their ways of life across the islands.

The islands are accessible by road bridge from mainland Canada, making it easy to reach by car. Visitors should expect wetland conditions and bring appropriate footwear for muddy or damp terrain.

The territory protects one of the largest freshwater marsh systems in the Great Lakes region, home to rare and specialized plant and animal species. This ecological hotspot serves as a vital refuge for migratory waterfowl passing through North America.
