Dildo Island, Islet in Trinity Bay, Canada
Dildo Island is a rocky, uninhabited formation at the entrance to Dildo Tip in Trinity Bay. The small island rises from the water and consists mainly of stony cliffs with minimal vegetation.
People settled on the island around 2,000 years ago and used it for seal hunting activities. Later in the 1800s, the site served as a location for fish breeding before operations there ceased.
The island was home to Indigenous peoples who left traces of their settlements here. Visitors can see archaeological remains that show how people once lived and worked on this remote location.
The island is only accessible by small boats or private ferries from the mainland, with the nearest docks located in the town of Dildo. The terrain is rocky and rough, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and move with care.
The island housed a cod hatchery between 1889 and 1897, making it one of the largest fish breeding stations of its era. During this period, millions of young fish were raised and released into the waters.
