Long Harbour Nickel Processing Plant, Nickel processing facility in Long Harbour-Mount Arlington Heights, Canada
The Long Harbour Nickel Processing Plant is a refinery in Newfoundland that processes nickel, cobalt, and copper from concentrated ore. It uses hydrometallurgical methods and contains a wharf for ore delivery, crushing and grinding equipment, and multiple processing stages spread across the industrial site.
Construction began in 2009 and the facility started operating in 2013, establishing local processing capability on the island. It was originally designed to process material from multiple mining sources before later focusing on a single supply source.
The establishment of this industrial facility represents a commitment between Vale and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to process nickel locally from Voisey's Bay Mine.
The site sits roughly 2 kilometers south of the port and spans a large industrial area with different processing sections. Most visitors can only view it from outside, as it remains an active working facility with security restrictions.
In 2016, the plant transitioned to processing materials exclusively from Voisey's Bay, transforming into a fully integrated Canadian mining and processing operation.
