Algo Centre Mall, shopping mall in Ontario, Canada
Algo Centre Mall was a shopping center in Elliot Lake with a straightforward layout of a long central corridor with shops on both sides and about 190,000 square feet (17,700 square meters) across two floors. Beyond retail stores, the building housed a hotel, library, government offices, and health clinics, making it a multipurpose hub for daily needs.
The shopping center opened in 1979 as a major hub for the growing town, with anchor tenants like Woolco, Dominion, and Shoppers Drug Mart. Over decades, the building suffered from chronic leaks and corrosion caused by water and road salt that weakened steel supports.
The mall served as a central gathering place for Elliot Lake residents for decades, where people shopped, met friends, and handled daily errands. It embodied community life and remained an important part of local routines even as economic changes shaped the region.
The building featured a parking lot on the roof, which was unusual for its time, and offered a central location in town with easy access for pedestrians and vehicles. Visitors could walk through various sections to find shops, public services, and other facilities all under one roof.
In 2012, a large section of the roof parking lot suddenly collapsed and crashed through the lower levels, killing two people and injuring more than twenty others. The tragedy was later attributed to decades of corrosion, poor waterproofing, and inadequate maintenance, drawing attention to the safety of aging structures in the community.
