CFS St. John's, Military base in St. John's, Canada
Canadian Forces Station St. John's sits along the north shore of Quidi Vidi Lake and incorporates portions of the former Pepperrell Air Force Base. The facility includes the Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander W. Anthony Paddon Building, which houses medical services, training areas, offices, and maintenance spaces for military operations.
The military installation began operations in 1941 under United States Army control and later transferred to Royal Canadian Navy management. This transition marked a significant shift in how the facility served regional defense needs.
The Military Family Resource Centre hosts regular programs and social events that bring together service members and their families. These activities create a sense of community among people who work and live in this specialized environment.
The base is accessible along the Quidi Vidi Lake shoreline, making it easy to orient yourself. Keep in mind this is an active military facility, so access may be limited in certain areas.
The base provides support to around 30 NATO naval vessels each year as they operate in Atlantic waters off Newfoundland. This role makes it a key point for maritime activity in the region.
