Cummings Bridge, Concrete open spandrel deck arch bridge in Ottawa, Canada.
Cummings Bridge is a concrete open spandrel arch bridge that crosses the Rideau River, connecting Rideau Street to Montreal Road in Ottawa. The structure carries four traffic lanes alongside dedicated bicycle lanes and pedestrian walkways on both sides.
A wooden bridge first crossed this section of the river in 1835, passing through Cummings Island where the Cummings family lived and operated a store. The current concrete structure was built in 1921 to provide a more direct connection as both sides of the river developed.
The bridge construction in 1921 marked a shift in local development, leading to improved connections between Ottawa neighborhoods and the former town of Vanier.
The bridge offers wide sidewalks and clearly marked bicycle lanes making it easy to cross on foot or by bike during daytime hours. Traffic can be heavy during rush periods, so plan accordingly if you prefer a quieter crossing experience.
Cummings Island below the bridge once held the first telephone exchange in Gloucester Township and various commercial businesses. Today the bridge route bypasses the island entirely, leaving its former role as a commercial hub largely forgotten.
