Guelph Lake

Guelph Lake, lake in Ontario, Canada

Guelph Lake is a large man-made reservoir in Ontario created in 1974 when a dam was built across the Speed River. The roughly 420-hectare area features two sandy beaches, over 10 kilometers of forested trails, more than 100 campsites with water and electricity, three boat launches, and facilities for picnicking and group gatherings. Only electric motors are permitted on boats, maintaining a quieter environment for paddlers and rowers.

The lake was created in 1974 when a dam was built across the Speed River to manage water flow and control flooding in the region. The dam also generates electricity for local needs, and over time the site has grown into an important recreational area managed by conservation authorities for community use.

The lake is named after the nearby city of Guelph. The waters attract rowing clubs and sailing communities, with one local club hosting Canada's largest fleet of Snipe sailboats and hosting regattas throughout the year. These traditions have made it a gathering place for people who share a passion for water sports.

The lake is open year-round with camping available from May to October, and parking is available for a fee. Visitors should watch children closely as there are no lifeguards on the beaches, and boats must be launched at designated boat ramps where rental services for canoes, kayaks, and small watercraft are available.

The annual Hillside Festival takes place on a unique stage built on a peninsula jutting into the water, featuring a green roof covered in plants. This outdoor music gathering transforms the lake into a special gathering place that blends performances with the natural setting.
