Millhaven Institution, Maximum security prison in Bath, Ontario, Canada
Millhaven Institution is a maximum security facility for male prisoners located in Bath, east of Kingston on the shore of Lake Ontario. The complex comprises several separated living units, a hospital wing, and a regional treatment centre designed to house roughly 500 inmates.
The institution was built starting in 1969 and originally planned to open in 1973, but received prisoners early in 1971 following riots at Kingston Penitentiary. It replaced the old Kingston Penitentiary, which was over a century old at that time.
The institution operates on traditional territories of the Crawford Purchase, Wendake-Nionwentsïo, and Ho-de-no-sau-nee-ga Mississauga indigenous peoples.
The facility is not open for tourist visits, but relatives of inmates may arrange contact under certain conditions. For more information, phone 613-351-8000 or write to PO Box 280, Loyalist, Ontario, K0H 1G0.
The floor plan follows a radial model in which all living areas extend from a central command post. Every movement between building sections must pass through this central control point.
