Mount Forest, community in Wellington North, Ontario
Mount Forest is a small town in Wellington North, Ontario, set on a plateau surrounded by hardwood forests. The town center mixes historic stone buildings and churches with newer structures, and the Saugeen River runs close by.
The settlement was originally called Birmingham and renamed Mount Forest in 1853 when surveyor Francis Kerr divided it into lots. The railway arrived in 1871 and brought new activity to the growing community.
The town takes its name from a nearby hill that a surveyor compared to a mountain. Today, events like the Fall Fair and Christmas Parade draw residents into the town center for shared celebrations.
Mount Forest sits northwest of Guelph and is easy to reach by major roads. The town center has shops, cafes, a museum, and parks with riverside trails for those who want to walk around.
Two brothers from Palmerston opened a carriage factory here in 1903 that employed around 70 workers and shipped horse-drawn vehicles across the region. The building still stands today, long after the factory closed when automobiles replaced horse-drawn transport.
