Peche Island, River island in Ontario, Canada
Peche Island is a river island located where Lake Saint Clair and the Detroit River meet, situated across from Windsor. The 86-acre property contains forested pathways, historical waterways, and diverse plant and animal life.
Indigenous peoples used the island for fishing and hunting long before French-Canadian families settled there in the 1700s. In the 1800s, businessman Hiram Walker transformed the landscape by building structures and recreational facilities.
The name comes from the French word for fish, reflecting its long history as a fishing center for local communities. Visitors can still sense this connection to the past while walking through the island today.
The island is accessible by shuttle boat from Lakeview Park Marina between June and October. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing for exploring the unpaved trails.
The shoreline is gradually disappearing because of cargo ship traffic and shifting water levels around the island. Restoration work continues to slow these losses and protect the landscape for visitors to come.
