St. John's Anglican Church, Anglican church in Peggys Cove, Canada.
St. John's is a church building in Peggy's Cove constructed with a wooden frame and vertical board-and-batten siding in Carpenter Gothic style. The structure features a steeply pitched roof and narrow lancet windows that define its exterior appearance.
Construction began in 1893 using timber sourced from across the bay and was completed in 1894 by a builder from Mahone Bay. The structure thus became an important religious building for the fishing community of this coastal area.
The building carries the name of its English patron saint and displays murals created by William E. deGarthe in 1963. These paintings blend religious and artistic traditions in a way visitors can directly experience inside.
Access is available from June through October when volunteer staff open the building six days per week for visitors. Plan your visit during this window, as seasonal restrictions apply and hours may vary based on local availability.
The building received heritage protection designation in 1993 and stands as the sole church structure in the entire village. This recognition makes it an architectural landmark for a small coastal community.
