Storyeum, Underground museum in Gastown, Vancouver, Canada
Storyeum was an underground museum in Gastown that stretched beneath Vancouver's streets, guiding visitors through different scenes of history. The spaces showed the past through designed sets and performers who brought historical moments to life in each area.
The museum opened in the early 2000s and offered a new way to experience British Columbia's history. Within a few years, it had to close when economic challenges made the operation unsustainable.
The site presented British Columbia's heritage through different scenes, including replicas of Indigenous longhouses and a Canadian Pacific Railway locomotive. Visitors could walk through these various historical settings and experience how the region's past was brought to life through these recreations.
The site was located deep underground and could be reached by large elevators that transported many visitors at once. The underground setting meant visitors needed to set aside time to explore this different world.
After closure, the space was taken over by a film and arts school that kept some of the original reconstructions as training areas. Some of these sets, such as a replica of a historic mining town, still remain at the location today.
