Zec Onatchiway, Controlled harvesting zone in Le Fjord-du-Saguenay, Canada.
Zec Onatchiway is a controlled harvesting zone featuring dense forests, numerous lakes, and flowing waterways across a large area in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. The landscape alternates between thick woodland, forest openings, and water bodies of various sizes.
The Quebec government created this zone in 1978 as a shift away from private hunting clubs toward managed public access to natural resources. This change gave ordinary people the opportunity to hunt and fish in regulated conditions.
The name comes from the Montagnais word 'unatshishineu', honoring the indigenous peoples who used this land for hunting and gathering. Today the territory remains connected to traditional outdoor practices and respect for the natural world.
Permits and maps are available at entrance stations accessible by Shipshaw Road and Bras Louis Road, where canoe and boat rentals are provided. A vehicle is necessary to reach the main areas.
The zone includes several fishing lakes spread across the territory, each with different water types and fish species for different skill levels. This variety allows visitors to try different fishing environments without traveling far.
