The Purple Onion coffee house, Folk music venue in Yorkville, Toronto, Canada

The Purple Onion Coffee House at 35 Avenue Road was a folk music venue housed in a Victorian building with simple wooden tables and chairs throughout. The small stage area provided just enough space for musicians to perform with acoustic instruments for the gathered crowd.

It opened in 1960 when four entrepreneurs pooled their resources to create a folk music space in the neighborhood. The venue operated for five years before closing in 1965.

The place served as a hub where folk musicians gathered to perform and develop their craft in front of an engaged audience. This close connection between performers and listeners created the kind of community feeling that defined folk music venues of that era.

Visitors should expect tight quarters since the space only held about 90 people total. This closeness to performers was part of the appeal, though it meant the place got quite crowded during peak times.

Some of the most important music from this place was written in the basement, where musicians could develop new ideas in quiet. This underground room became a hidden space for creative work separate from the main performance area.
