Perley Bridge

Perley Bridge, Steel bridge across Ottawa River between Hawkesbury and Grenville, Canada

Perley Bridge was a steel structure spanning the Ottawa River between Hawkesbury in Quebec and Grenville in Ontario. It had two traffic lanes and a separate pedestrian walkway that allowed vehicles and people to cross safely.

Planning for the crossing lasted roughly 20 years before construction began in 1930, with the bridge opening to traffic the following year. It served as a major transportation link between Ontario and Quebec until it was closed and removed in 1998.

The bridge connected English-speaking Ontario communities with French-speaking Quebec populations, facilitating cross-cultural exchanges between provinces.

The crossing was built to handle both vehicle and pedestrian traffic between the two provinces. Today you can still visit the riverbank where it once stood to understand the geography of this former route.

Engineers studied the demolished bridge sections to examine corrosion patterns in the epoxy-coated rebar used in the deck construction.
