Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre, Municipal cultural center in Elliot Lake, Canada.
The Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre was a three-story concrete building containing a 360-seat theater, administrative offices, and the Nuclear and Mining Museum. The facility functioned as a multipurpose venue hosting various performances and exhibitions.
The building originally opened as the Nordic Hotel in the early 1950s before being transformed into a cultural center. It was later renamed after former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson to reflect its new community role.
The center served as the main gathering place where residents attended theater shows and saw local art on display. Community members relied on it for their cultural events and public celebrations.
The facility experienced a roof collapse in February 2019 and was subsequently closed to the public. Cultural programs moved to the W.H. Collins Centre nearby, which underwent improvements to its theater spaces.
During its early years as a hotel, the building housed the largest bar in the Algoma area. It served as a social hub for the local mining workforce who came to relax and socialize after work.
