Born, Mountain summit in Solothurn, Switzerland
Born is a 719-meter peak located in the Olten area of Solothurn canton. Its slopes show visible signs of ancient extraction work, with scattered depressions breaking up the hillside.
People began extracting stone here roughly 7000 years ago. Excavations carried out in 2007 and 2008 confirmed these mining activities and also uncovered traces of early settlement.
The mountain served as a workplace for stone tool makers over many centuries. Visitors walking here can still notice the shallow pits scattered across the slopes where people once extracted raw materials.
Several hiking routes run up and around the mountain, connecting it with nearby towns like Aarburg and Olten. The area offers various paths suitable for different fitness levels and time frames.
The mountain holds substantial deposits of flint, a material prized for its sharp edges when struck, making it ideal for tool production. This geological feature explains why people were drawn here for thousands of years.
