Avenches

Avenches is a protected Swiss municipality featuring medieval buildings and Roman archaeological remains along narrow streets. The town sits at 435 meters in elevation and shows architecture and stone structures from different historical periods layered together.

The site was once Aventicum, the capital of Roman Helvetia, with city walls, an amphitheater, and temple foundations. After the Roman period ended, the place gradually transformed into a medieval settlement.

The Roman Museum displays objects from ancient times and shows how people lived in this former Roman center. These collections reveal the importance this place held in the classical world.

The old town center is easy to explore on foot and requires no special preparation. Regular train connections link this place to other Swiss cities.

An equestrian center operates in town and offers insight into classical riding traditions. Visitors can often observe activities related to horse training and breeding.
