Älplibahn, Aerial lift in Malans, Grisons, Switzerland

The Älplibahn is a summer-only aerial cable car running from Malans in the Bündner Herrschaft up to the Älpli on the Vilan at 1,802 m above sea level. Its single track is 3,482 m long and climbs almost 1,200 m, a ride of about 14 minutes. The two yellow cabins, marked "die älpli bahn", hang from grey metal arms and carry folded seats on an external frame.

Construction of the Älplibahn began in 1939, and it opened in 1941 as military cable car MSB 105, supplying border troops; the municipality of Malans held a 10% stake. From 1945 to 1973 it carried tourists, then closed for lack of renovation funds. A newly founded cooperative association reopened the funicular in 1982.

The Älplibahn is run by the Älplibahnverein, a cooperative association founded to reopen the line in 1982 after it closed in 1973 for lack of renovation funds. Volunteer teams staff the operation of both the cable car and the restaurant at the top station. The name Älpli is the local diminutive of Alp, the alpine pasture the line serves.

The Älplibahn runs only in summer, covering 3,482 metres with about 1,200 metres of elevation gain in roughly 14 minutes. It is a way to reach the start or finish of the Prättigauer Höhenweg. The valley station stands in Malans; the top station is on the Älpli at 1,802 metres.
