The Aargau canton library houses 710,000 volumes within its collection, serving as a primary resource center for the Swiss region of Aargau.
Founded in 1803, the library acquired manuscripts from the Zurlauben family and later incorporated collections from the Abbeys of Muri and Wettingen in 1841.
The collection contains the Easter Play of Muri from 1250, recognized as the earliest German rhyming dramatic manuscript still in existence.
Located at Obere Vorstadt 6 in Aarau, the library operates with the ALEPH 500 system and circulates 36,000 items annually for public use.
The medieval department preserves the Wettinger Gradual from 1330-1335, distinguished by its illuminated manuscript artistry.
