Lago di Lei, Alpine reservoir at Italy-Switzerland border, Grisons
The Lago di Lei stretches across 8 kilometers through mountainous terrain, reaching depths of 133 meters and storing 197 million cubic meters of water.
The construction of the dam in 1962 required a territorial exchange between Italy and Switzerland, with Italy ceding the dam area to Switzerland in 1955.
The reservoir represents successful international cooperation between Italy and Switzerland, enabling shared management of water resources and power generation.
The reservoir supplies water to the Hinterrhein power stations, contributing to regional electricity production through a 138-meter-high dam with a 690-meter crown length.
The water body contains the only waters in Italian territory that flow into the North Sea through the Rhine basin, differing from Italy's typical Mediterranean drainage pattern.
