Sidelhorn, Alpine summit in Bernese Alps, Switzerland
Sidelhorn is an alpine summit reaching 2764 meters located between the cantons of Bern and Valais, with steep slopes descending toward Grimselsee lake. The area is characterized by rocky ridges, jagged mountain flanks, and views of surrounding lakes in the high alpine environment.
The mountain gained importance through the development of Grimsel Pass, a key connection between the Rhone and Aare valleys across the Alps. This historic route enabled transport and communication between different regions of Switzerland.
The peak draws mountaineers and hikers who come to experience the steep terrain and ridges. It serves as a popular destination for day trips into the high alpine region.
The peak is accessible from Grimsel Pass, with the northeast ridge offering the most direct route requiring about two hours of hiking. The trails are marked, though mountain experience is needed as slopes are steep and weather can change quickly.
The pyramid-shaped summit offers views of Tribtenseewli lake at 2356 meters, a smaller mountain lake that few visitors notice. From here, hikers also observe unusual ridge formations of surrounding peaks that look different under varying light conditions.
