Bodmer Foundation, Literary museum in Cologny, Switzerland
The Bodmer Foundation is a museum in Cologny, in the Canton of Geneva, that holds around 160,000 objects, including ancient papyri, medieval manuscripts, and rare printed books. The collection is housed in a building that connects two neo-baroque manor houses with a purpose-built underground level.
Martin Bodmer began building his collection in the 1920s with the aim of bringing together the most important written works from across the world in one place. The foundation later received recognition as a UNESCO Memory of the World site and was listed as a class A Swiss cultural property of national significance.
The collection covers written works from almost every part of the world and every major period of human history, displayed side by side in a way that shows connections across cultures. Visitors can read original letters by writers and composers next to ancient papyri and medieval manuscripts, all in the same setting.
The museum went through a major renovation and is expected to reopen in spring 2025, so it is worth checking current opening conditions before visiting. The site is in Cologny, just outside Geneva, and is best reached by car or taxi from the city center.
The underground gallery level, designed by Mario Botta in 2003, receives daylight through openings in the ceiling despite being fully below ground. This solution protects the most fragile objects from direct exposure while avoiding the feeling of a closed, windowless space.
