Rütli

Rütli is a mountain meadow on the shore of Lake Lucerne, surrounded by steep slopes and offering open views of the surrounding peaks. The spot is remote and accessible only on foot or by boat.

In 1291, representatives from Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden met here and sealed an oath that led to the formation of the Old Swiss Confederacy. This moment marks the beginning of modern Switzerland.

The place carries the name of an ancient agreement and is perceived by Swiss people as a site of unity. Today, people gather here on August 1st to celebrate their national identity.

The best access is by boat from Lake Lucerne or via hiking trails from Seelisberg, with the walk taking roughly two hours. Comfortable shoes and weather protection are important since conditions can change quickly.

General Henri Guisan delivered an important speech here in 1940 to Swiss military officers, reinforcing the nation's independence during World War II. This address is remembered today as a symbol of Swiss resolve during a perilous time.
