Toffen Castle, Medieval castle in Toffen, Switzerland
Toffen Castle is a château near Bern with pronounced Baroque architectural features, consisting of a main building, western wing, and spacious dining hall. The structure sits on manicured grounds that reflect the typical layout of an estate from this period.
The castle is first documented in 1306 when Johann von Bremgarten transferred his estates to his uncles Heinrich and Ulrich von Bremgarten. This transfer marks the beginning of its recorded history in the region.
The interior rooms display Renaissance decorations created by artisans from the Alsace region in the early 17th century. These works were commissioned as part of major renovations ordered by the castle's owner at that time.
The castle sits approximately 10 kilometers south of Bern and remains privately owned, though it holds protected status as a Swiss cultural property of national significance. Visitors can see the exterior from public vantage points, but the interior is not regularly open for tours.
Albrecht Kauw created four detailed paintings of the castle and surrounding lands during the 17th century, each from the perspective of a different cardinal direction. These artworks offer a rare glimpse into how the estate and landscape appeared during that era.
