Horben Castle

Horben Castle is a stone structure on a high plateau near the border with Canton Lucerne at approximately 800 meters elevation. The building has multiple levels and is surrounded by walls that visitors can see while exploring the site.

Abbot Placidus Zurlauben had the building constructed in 1700 as a retreat for a member of the clergy. A chapel was later added to the grounds, and the structure received major restoration work in the late 1900s.

The name Horben comes from the high plateau where the building sits, helping visitors understand the place within its landscape. Inside, decorative wall paintings and rococo sculptures show how those who lived here once enjoyed art and beauty.

The building sits on an elevated plateau, so visitors should expect some effort when climbing to reach it. The property is privately owned and access may be limited, so it is wise to check in advance whether a tour is possible.

A chapel dedicated to Saint Wendelin and Ubaldus stands on the grounds and was built during the early 1700s as a spiritual addition to the residence. This small building reveals that the location served religious purposes beyond being a simple retreat.
