Funiculaire Sierre-Montana-Crans, Mountain transport system in Sierre, Switzerland
The Funiculaire Sierre-Montana-Crans is a cable railway that carries passengers from the valley town of Sierre up to the mountain resort of Crans-Montana. The journey climbs approximately 900 meters in elevation across a route that winds through the Alpine landscape.
The railway opened in 1911 as two separate sections that required passengers to change trains halfway up. A major renovation in 1997 unified the route into one continuous line for modern travelers.
The funicular represents Swiss engineering excellence with its electric traction system by Frey AG Stans and cabins manufactured by Gangloff in Bern.
The entrance is located near Sierre railway station and can be reached on foot in a few minutes. Departures happen regularly throughout the day, giving travelers flexibility in planning their journey.
The system travels at 8 meters per second across its route, making it the longest funicular railway in Europe with a total length of 4192 meters.
