Le Fanel, Protected wetland in Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland
Le Fanel is a protected wetland covering about 485 hectares of reed beds, marshes, and water surfaces along the northeastern shore of Lake Neuchâtel at 430 meters elevation. An observation tower allows visitors to watch more than 300 bird species, including ducks, geese, herons, and gulls in their natural settings.
The site became a cantonal nature reserve in 1967 and was designated as Switzerland's first Ramsar wetland in 1976. This international recognition reflected the area's importance for protecting bird habitats and migratory corridors.
This location draws birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts who come to observe migratory species and marsh birds throughout the year. The reed beds and open waters create a space where visitors connect with the rhythms of bird life and seasonal change.
The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when light is good and birds are most active and visible. Accessibility varies by season and weather, so calm days without strong winds offer the best viewing conditions.
The site consists of three distinct protection zones: a core water area, an agricultural buffer zone, and a recreational forest zone. This arrangement balances habitat conservation with sustainable land use and visitor access throughout the year.
