Hünigen Castle, 16th-century castle in Konolfingen, Switzerland
Hünigen is a 16th-century castle in Konolfingen built with stone and multiple towers arranged around a central courtyard. The complex includes guest rooms, meeting spaces, and dining facilities, all surrounded by landscaped grounds.
The original medieval structure was destroyed by fire, after which Niklaus von Scharnachtal built the stone castle in its place. This rebuilding in the mid-16th century marked a fresh start for the property and its surroundings.
Today it serves as a meeting place for guests and events, with its architecture reflecting Renaissance building traditions of the region. The rooms and courtyard show how noble families once lived and welcomed visitors.
The castle sits between Bern and Thun and is easily reached from different directions. Keep in mind that much of the grounds are reserved for guests, though the surrounding area offers many walking and cycling routes.
The property was once the home of the von May family and still carries personal traces of their time in its rooms. Today visitors can rent special mountain bikes to explore the rolling hills of the Emmental region from the castle.
