Hörnli Express, Mountain summit in Grisons, Switzerland.
The Hörnli Express is a mountain railway in Grisons that carries visitors to just under 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) elevation. The modern cable car system connects the valley base with the upper station, providing access to hiking trails and ski terrain throughout the area.
A transport facility opened in the Hörnli area in 1945 and was the longest ski lift in Switzerland at that time. The system has since undergone multiple modernizations to better serve the growing number of visitors over the decades.
The Hörnli mountain hosts the traditional New Year's descent race every January 1st, drawing winter sports participants from across the region.
The best time to visit is outside peak periods such as weekends and school holidays. Bad weather can temporarily close the cable car, so it is worth checking current conditions before heading up.
The rock of Hörnli consists of basalt that originated from the ocean floor of the ancient Tethys Sea around 150 million years ago. This geological history is visible in the rock composition that shapes the landscape today.
