Bärenburg

Bärenburg is a medieval castle ruin perched on a rocky hilltop near Andeer with preserved defensive walls and building remains. The site overlooks the valley and displays typical features of a strategically positioned fortification.

Construction began in 1251 under Bishop Heinrich III of Montfort as a control point for trade routes. The Schams Feud of 1451 saw local farmers seize the castle, leading to its eventual abandonment.

The ruins reveal how castles shaped daily life and controlled power in medieval times. Such fortified seats served as centers of authority and administration for surrounding communities.

Marked hiking trails from Andeer village lead up to the ruins with clear signposting throughout. Information panels on site explain the structure and history of the fortification.
