Kulthöhle Zillis, Archaeological cave in Zillis-Reischen, Switzerland
Kulthöhle Zillis is a natural limestone cave in a Swiss valley with stone remains at its entrance indicating earlier construction work. The interior is modest in size but provided space for people to leave objects or conduct ceremonies.
The cave was used by people in the early centuries after Christ, as shown by finds of coins and vessels. It was only in the 1990s that underground graves nearby were discovered by chance, changing understanding of the site.
The cave served as a place for religious offerings and ritual practices over many centuries. Visitors can imagine how people left coins, beads, and decorated vessels here to express their wishes or beliefs.
The site sits quite high in the Alps and is best reached on foot, especially when weather is dry. Wear sturdy shoes and allow enough time so you do not rush the walk uphill.
Seven human burials were found nearby, showing how the sacred site transformed over time from a place of offerings into a cemetery. This is a rare example of a location that completely changed its purpose while remaining sacred.
