Johanneskirche, Modern church in Kannenfeld district, Basel, Switzerland.
The Johanneskirche is a modern church building in the Kannenfeld district of Basel. The structure features a rectangular form, flat roof, concrete and exposed steel beams, with glass blocks that define its architectural composition and give the building its distinctive character.
Karl Egender and Ernst Friedrich Burckhardt won an architectural competition and built this structure in 1936. The project marked the arrival of modern architectural thinking in Basel's religious buildings.
The interior reflects 1930s design through its organ pipe arrangement, forward-facing console, and black folding chairs that define the worship space. These elements shape how the room looks and functions, making the era of its creation immediately visible to visitors.
The building houses community facilities that support various activities alongside regular services throughout the week. Visitors can enter the church during opening hours and explore both the worship space and the function of the additional rooms.
The bell tower opens to views from three sides and holds five bells cast by the H. Rüetschi foundry. The largest bell brings a distinctive sound to the neighborhood when rung for services and special occasions.
