Wimmis Castle, Medieval castle in Frutigen-Niedersimmental, Switzerland
Wimmis Castle is a stone fortress standing on a hillside above the village, built around a central tower with residential spaces and surrounded by double defensive walls. The structure shows modifications made across several centuries of habitation and use.
The Lords of Wimmis built this fortress in the 12th century as their family seat and administration base. It later came under Bernese control and served as the regional authority center for the lower valley.
The castle holds importance as a record of how Swiss noble residences changed and adapted through the centuries, with different building styles visible throughout the structure. Walking around it, you can see how each era left its mark on the fortress.
The castle is accessible through walking trails that connect with the Spiez-Zweisimmen railway line and the Simmental road network. Wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time for the uphill walk to reach it.
Gardens now grow on the grounds where a settlement once stood before being destroyed by fire in 1708. These planted areas create an interesting contrast with the stone fortress above them.
