Niesen, Mountain summit in Bernese Alps, Switzerland
The Niesen rises to 2362 meters above sea level, forming a perfect triangular silhouette against the sky over Lake Thun in the Bernese Alps.
The mountain's name evolved from its earlier designation Yesen, referring to the yellow gentian plants that continue to grow on its slopes since ancient times.
The mountain's geometric form influenced the works of modernist painter Paul Klee, who incorporated pyramidal shapes inspired by Niesen into his paintings.
Visitors can reach the summit via a funicular railway from Mülenen station, with the journey from Bern taking approximately 40 minutes by train.
The maintenance stairs running parallel to the funicular track contain 11,674 steps, making them the longest staircase in the world.
