Ruin Mülenen castle and Letzi

The remnants of Mülenen Castle include a rectangular tower measuring 10 by 19 meters, surrounded by a square courtyard of 24 meters per side.

The castle and wall, first mentioned in 1269, were built by the Freiherr von Kien family to control the alpine pass leading to Canton Valais.

The archaeological site represents a significant example of medieval Swiss fortification architecture and defense strategy in the Bernese region.

The stone wall sections, discovered during road construction in 1990, underwent extensive excavation and conservation work until 1996 for preservation purposes.

The Letzi wall, measuring 1.45 meters wide with remaining heights of 1.5 meters, incorporates two construction phases from the 12th and 13th centuries.
