Steinsberg Castle, Castle ruin on hilltop near Ardez, Switzerland.

Steinsberg Castle is a castle ruin on an elevated plateau near Ardez, featuring a four-story keep and sections of the original ring wall. The stone structures remain clearly visible across the site and show the medieval fortification's typical defensive layout.

The castle was built as a medieval fortification in a strategic location and changed ownership several times throughout the centuries. A major turning point came in 1499 when imperial troops attacked and burned it during the Swabian War.

The nearby Church of St. Luzius features an unusual north-south orientation of its nave, which is uncommon in Romanesque design. Visitors can observe this architectural choice while walking around the ruins.

To reach the castle ruins, visitors follow a marked path from Ardez village leading up to the plateau. The walk is moderately steep but the path is reasonably well-maintained and leads directly to the site.

The ruins contain traces of window seats from the 14th century that show where castle residents once sat and looked out. These small details are often overlooked but give visitors a direct sense of daily life in medieval times.
