Kleine Schanze, Park and cultural site in central Bern, Switzerland
Kleine Schanze is a converted fortification next to the Federal Palace with green spaces, walking paths, and seating areas. The site offers views of the Alps and the surrounding city landscape from multiple vantage points.
The bastion was built in 1625 as a defensive structure to protect the city. In 1817 it was converted into a park, becoming the first example of a baroque fortification transformed into a garden in Switzerland.
The name refers to its original function as a smaller defensive fortification from the Renaissance era. Visitors today walk through the green spaces and use the site as a place to escape the city and take in the views around them.
The site is easily reached from Federal Square and offers refreshments at the café during warmer months. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the paths have varying elevations and some areas are steeper.
Visitors can play traditional games like pétanque, chess, and mill games in various areas of the park, making it a social gathering place. Children also find a dedicated area with spinning top toys near the café.
